San Antonio Hidden Gems

By Ganteng Boy

San Antonio is the unofficial mecca of Tex Mex food. And though there is a plethora of Mexican and Tex Mex foods to choose from in San Antonio, I struggle to find solid recommendations for other types of cuisine.

Enter Dough. I’m not talking about the options trading software, or the alias for cash.

Dough is the only authentic Neapolitan style of pizza in San Antonio – and dare I say Texas.

Founded in 2007, Doug and Lori Horn decided to take a shot at opening up their own pizzeria. They both have deep industry knowledge from the hotel and restaurant business. What sets Dough apart from other pizza cafes is that they hyper focus on a specific style of pizza from a particular region of Italy. You guessed it – Naples, Italy.

They are also one of the few restaurants in Texas that are a part of the APN (Association of Neapolitan Pizzaioli). This prestigious organization strives to educate the 150 year+ craft of making Neapolitan pizza and certifies the adeherence to this authentic procedure.

The ingredients are fresh and flavorful. My favorite part about the pizza is the crisp, burnt edges of the cheese, closest to the crust. A good pizza tastes well; a great pizza has an amazing crust. Dough serves great pizza.

According to my Italian taste expert (aka my father who used to work with the national oil company of Italy), this is by far one of the most authentic pizzerias in Texas. As a marathon runner, I am a big fan of Dough. I can carb up without spending too much ‘dough’.

Be sure you save room for desserts, because the next hidden gem is the best night cap fix.

Whiskey Cake Kitchen & Bar is a neat restaurant that recently opened in the Shops at La Cantera in November of 2014. Ever since then, they have cranked out some of the most delicious dessert. That’s right, they only have one signature dessert – Whiskey Cake.

Two of my most favorite things in the world have become one. The whiskey cake is served slightly warm. It sits on a wonderful pool of caramel and butter cream sugar. You have the choice of either indulging the whipped cream on the side, or on top of the cake (choose wisely my friend). As you bite into the cake, it has a hint of whiskey notes. It is mandatory that you order your favorite whiskey or scotch.

Here is the key to unlocking a party in your mouth:

  1. Take a spoonfool of the whiskey cake. Get a little bit of the caramel goodness from the bottom of the plate.
  2. Savor the taste of the whiskey cake.
  3. Take a sip of whiskey. Notice how the flavor of the cake marries well with the whiskey/scotch/bourbon.
  4. Rinse and repeat.
